Dexter – 7yo- 16.2hh Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorse – Companion Home Only Finding this advert incredibly difficult to write, but I'm looking for the perfect forever home for my beloved Dexter. Dexter is a 16.2hh Thoroughbred ex-racehorse who has been with me since he had just turned four. He is now looking for a knowledgeable, loving home where he can enjoy life primarily as a companion. Dexter has a wonderful temperament on the ground. He is incredibly sweet-natured, kind, and a pleasure to have around. He loves attention and forms strong bonds with his people. Unfortunately, Dexter shows PTSD-related behaviours and neurological issues that make him unsuitable as a ridden horse for the vast majority of people. He is currently at a loan home with an amazing lady that has a lot of experience with ex-racehorses, who has also struggled to understand why he reacts the way he does. He will make fantastic progress, only to seemingly take a huge step backwards for no obvious reason. This unpredictability means he cannot be sold as a riding horse. Dexter underwent a full veterinary assessment last year due to these ongoing behavioural concerns, so we are confident that his behaviour is not related to pain. He also receives routine dental care, regular farrier visits, professional saddle fitting, and is ridden in a soft bit. We have made every effort to identify any sourceof pain, discomfort, or misunderstanding thatcould explain his behaviour. In many ways, we hadhoped an underlying cause would be found, as it would have given us something specific to treatand address. Unfortunately, no physical ormanagement-related issues have been identified, despite thorough investigation.. Anyone enquiring must be looking for a companion first and foremost. If he is never ridden again, that must be something you are completely happy to accept. This is not a project horse for someone wanting a challenge. His future home must value him for who he is, not for what he might become. His welfare is my absolute priority, and I will only let him go to a home that understands his needs and will give him the patience, consistency, and love he deserves. We are more than happy for Dexter to be viewed, and we welcome any questions or enquiries from genuinely interested people.
