Booking essential at https://www.movemoremovewell.co.uk/icelandic-horse-workshop THE ICELANDIC HORSE The Icelandic horse is a small, sturdy horse breed that has lived in Iceland for over 1,000 years. Descended from horses brought by Norse settlers, it is known for its strength, endurance, and calm temperament. Despite its size, it is considered a horse rather than a pony. The breed is famous for its unique gaits, especially the smooth tölt, which provides a comfortable ride, and the flying pace, a fast two-beat gait. Icelandic horses are protected by strict breeding laws, and any horse that leaves Iceland is not allowed to return, helping preserve the breed's health and purity. The tölt is a unique four-beat gait that makes the Icelandic horse especially famous. Unlike the trot, where the rider experiences an up-and-down bouncing motion, the tölt is remarkably smooth because the horse always has at least one foot on the ground. The gait can be performed at a wide range of speeds, from a slow, collected walk-like pace to speeds approaching a canter. Skilled Icelandic horses can maintain a balanced, rhythmic tölt while carrying a rider with very little movement in the saddle, making it ideal for endurance riding and touring.
